Welcome to this edition of The Poetic AI, an experiment in storytelling using artificial intelligence tools to craft art and poetry. I'm Thomas Alan.
Note: Based on a recent Twitter poll, 65% do not listen to the voiceover, so I haven’t included on this week. If you want me to bring this back, comment and let me know.
This week I explore the contradictions of the human condition.
The age of artificial intelligence is here, or so it seems. Every day brings a new story about AI, some funny, some disturbing.
A race has begun to the AI finish line, whatever that may be.
For humans to fully accept and trust artificial intelligence, The machine must navigate the maze of our strengths and weaknesses and our immense contradictory capacity for love and war. Factoring into the algorithm, we are a series of contradictions that seems crucial for success.
We hope and cling to happiness while constantly seeking more as if we desire something beyond satisfaction.
Perhaps we seek a deeper purpose and meaning in life, realizing that happiness alone is not enough.
We continuously seek more and struggle to slow down and enjoy momentary happiness.
I recently joked with a friend that somewhere in the cosmos, there's a planet where humans are one of their reality channels. 😂
Every human understands the complexity and weight of the human condition. We live it every second of every day.
But, as a creative, I feel this weight more profoundly than others, the two halves of a whole, each fighting for supremacy.
I'm in love with the artificial nature and logic of technology, yet I'm an artist in love with the organic beauty of nature and people.
I like engaging in conversation or simply observing. I can never learn enough, but I constantly feel overwhelmed.
Humans are a never-ending experiment in contradictions.
Will the machine get how we desire something while simultaneously fearing it?
Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung wrote, "Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to an understanding of ourselves." We judge others for things we see in ourselves.
How will the machine's programming respond to these contradictions? Is this a requirement for success or the ultimate limitation of AI?
As we move into this new age of AI, how will the algorithms and models navigate the maze of the human condition's contradictions and juxtapositions?
I hope you enjoy this week's poem.
Every moment of every day, a storm brews Contradictions and a battle of views The light and the dark coexist within Contradictions and Juxtapositions, a constant spin. We yearn for love yet push it away Seek comfort, yet fear to stay We strive for success but fear its cost In the push and pull, we are often lost. We desire peace, yet wage war Hope for happiness while seeking more We claim to seek truth but hide from its light In these contradictions, we fight our own fight. We grasp for freedom, yet cling to chains The future calls, but fear remains Strength is sought, but power frightens Our own doubts, the fear that heightens In all these conflicts, a beauty unfolds The human spirit, a story untold Our flaws are gems, our worth untold In contradictions, a truth we hold
I hope you enjoyed this issue.
I welcome your feedback and suggestions for future issues. If you have any themes or ideas you would like to see explored, please don’t hesitate to email me. I’m always seeking new ways to collaborate with AI tools to create unique and interesting content. Thank you for joining me on this journey.
"Do I contradict myself? Very well, then I contradict myself, I am large, I contain multitudes." — Walt Whitman.
The initial content draft is AI-generated using ChatGPT and other GPT-3 tools, then edited using Grammarly. I generate the art with MidJourney. Image prompts are in the alt tags. I use abstract and minimalist styles as I think this best represents poetry's complex and simplistic narratives.
